Welcome back to Health Class. We reviewed the expectations last class and today I collected your signed paper and your information sheet.

The work completed in class today: vocabulary for unit 1 and we worked in groups to review the Health Triangle and Influences on health. You created a word  splash that will be shared with the class.

Today was the last call for the Wellness Project. You also took a binder quiz. See  me if you are missing the binder quiz or it will remain a 0

There are many sources of pressure touse drugs or participate in unsafe behavior. We  looked at the sources of these pressures. The pressure can be external(media, peers, family, ads on TV, pop ups on the internet, music, TV, movies) or they can be internal(self-pressure, self-talk). How you deal with these pressures can be life-changing.

We did a group activity using DECIDE. If you were absent the activity is in the classroom folder. NO HOMEWORK. Your final Current Event is due AFTER laptops are collected so you may want to do the last current event ahead of time. Some of you are exempt!

Today we did a compare and contrast of Gateway drugs: get the notes if you were absent. Friday we will finish our drug abuse series with discussing sources of pressure to use a drug

BINDER QUIZ ON FRIDAY: MAKE SURE YOUR BINDER IS ORGANIZED.

Today we did a wrap up activity about substance abuse. The Bengal and Wildcats did a Talk Show activity. Each group was given a role(police, counselors, ER doctor…) and were given time to answer 3 questions related to their role in dealing with an alcoholic teen. The grade was earned based on how well you answered the questions related to your area and how you used the time given to you in class.

The Siberian Team did a word splash looking at the various aspects of standing up to the pressure to say no to a drug.

We will wrap up the unit this week by comparing and contrasting the effects of Gateway drugs and resisting the pressure to use a drug.

Today we continued with Gateway Drugs. We discussed reasons why people might take the risk of using drugs and the consequences that might occur to you and others if you choose to use a drug.

Tobacco use can cost you a great deal. Today we looked at the short-term cost of using tobacco(bout 50 dollars a week) wow what you could do with the cash if you do not smoke!! The long-term effects(addiction and disease) can ruin your life and the lives of those who love you.

Choosing NOT to use s drug can have wonderful benefits. For 5 Bonus bucks: Use the acronym DECIDE and explain how you could use DECIDE when someone offers you a drink.                                                                               Situation: It is 9pm and  you are at a friend’s home. They suggest you drink some beer. Their parents will not be home until midnoght and no one will know. Use DECIDE(explain how you will use each step(letter) of DECIDE to make a decsion about having a beer. DUE NEXT CLASS

The consequences of using a drug can be awful. Your entire health triangle can be affected when you choose to use a drug. Today we looked at videos that discussed the consequences of using alcohol and/or marijuana. They have many similar affects on the body and learning how to refuse a drug can help you avoid a lot of serious consequences.

We will look at the consequences of using tobacco products when we meet next week. You have a Current Event due next class. If you do your current event on a topic related to tobacco products(smokeless tobacco, cigarettes,), alcohol, or marijuana and you earn a 14-16 on the Current Event, I will give you 3 Bonus Bucks
